THE FOLK ORC FESTIVAL WORKSHOPS
The aim of THE FOLK ORC is to get more people playing music, and this is what our Festival Workshops are here to do. With our crew of 4 to 6 tutors and our tent 'Peggy', we introduce people to playing music. Some of the people we have come into our tent have never played an instrument before, they may be young or old, it doesn't matter to us, we can get them playing and joining in. We are also there for people who already play an instrument and either want to try something different, pick up a few tips or get some experience playing with other like minded musicians whilst learning some traditional folk songs.
FESTIVAL BAND WORKSHOPS
The core of our Festival Workshop programme is the Festival Band Workshop which typically takes place in the morning for 2hrs each day over a 3 day festival. In this workshop we invite everyone in, whether new to playing or experienced, and we learn a set of traditional folk songs and play them as a group. At most festivals, this tends to culminate in a performance on one of the stages. It truly is amazing how good a group of 30+ musicians of varying ability, some of whom have only picked up an instrument a few days before, can sound. For us, this is a truly fufilling part of what we do and are incredibly proud of those participants who join us on stage each time.
INSTRUMENT SPECIFIC WORKSHOPS
Our instrument specific workshops provide a more detailed introduction to one of the instruments we have in our colection. Most popular has been the introduction to mandolin workshops, particularly with guitarists looking for something a bit different. We also do fiddle and bodhran workshops for beginners too.
The Folk Orc Open Sessions are perfect for musicians of any level but are aimed at those who have yet to gain the confidence to play in a 'blind' session or a singaround. Much like a standard session, we gather round and play a selection of traditional songs and tune sets. The difference being that we take these songs and tunes from the Folk Orc Open Session Book, which we have copies of around the tent for people to follow. The book cotains the lyrics, chords, notation and mandolin tab for 18 songs and tune sets that have been selected and arranged by the Folk Orc. The book is available to buy from the website for those wanting a head start on the songs. Copies will also be for sale at the workshops.
In between the workshops and sessions our tent stays open to welcome anybody wanting to come in and try one of the instruments with a little more one-to-one guidance, or just have some time to sit and play the instruments by themselves. This has proved to be a very popular aspect of our festival programme and the tent has been consistently busy throughout the day with people of all ages coming in for tips or advice on instruments and playing music in general.
Here is an example of a standard 3-day festival programme. This programme is of course subject to change depending on the festival, so keep an eye out on our facebook page for updates and the chalkboard that sits outside our tent during the weekend.
